What Our Martial Arts Students & Parents Are Saying About Newcastle Karate Academy?

KARLEY

I've wanted to join a kickboxing class for a long time but being a bigger woman I was apprehensive. I liked the Newcastle Karate page, read the reviews and watched the video clips and decided to give the two free classes a go. Marc and the ladies were so welcoming. I felt so comfortable. After the second class I was keen to join. Looking forward to continuing on with classes and getting fitter. Ladies kick boxing is the highlight of my week!

My husband and I had been looking around for a karate class for our son & when we walked into Newcastle Karate not only were we impressed by the size of this venue but we were greeted by Marc with a friendly smile & a lot of great information about his classes & his team We didn't feel any pressure to sign up but by the end of the class & the smile on our son's face we knew this was the place for him , he has just received his next belt & is feeling very special so thank you to Marc & his team for giving Jett just what he needed, I constantly tell all my friends about how good this place is.

I have been attending the ladies kickboxing for almost 3 years. What a great way to learn skills, raise fitness and meet new people. All walks of life have come through the doors and become a part of the Newcastle Karate crew. Friendships have been made, confidence levels have grown, and opportunities to diversify to other classes have been offered. I personally loved my time when I trained with my daughter and saw her grow in strength, confidence and self-defence. It brought comfort to me, knowing she had the basics if she ever required it. This comfortable, relaxed setting is what you make of it. I personally have grown so much from coming here, and love nothing more than to let my frustrations out on the pads.

Newcastle Karate is a fantastic dojo. The facilty is great with lots of mat space and plenty of heavy bags. The instructors are all amazing, a wealth of knowledge between them. I look forward to many years of training with this great team.

My son Isaac began the Kids BJJ classes at the start of the year. He is a shy kid and I still remember the way there for his first lesson he said "Dad what if the kids don't like me". As soon as he got there the kids and coaches made him feel comfortable straight away. Isaac plays other sports but he now tells me he would pick bjj over all of them. I would say his behaviour has also improved since he began his classes. He loves it. Not long after I decided to give the Adults BJJ a go and at 41 years I am really enjoying the challenge. It is very family friendly and I cant recommend enough!

I've tried every class imaginable at the gym.. body attack, balance, pump, spin, aqua, cxx... you name it & I've tried it. I always ended up bored and unmotivated. Ladies Kickboxing is the first thing in forever that I've tried and immediately fell in love with. It teaches you real skills, so you feel confident in your abilities while also getting fitter. I now go 3 times a week and am keen to start a karate class! If you're like me, & usually unmotivated to work out, I 100% recommend giving this a try.

SHAYNE
1st Dan - Go Kan Ryu Karate

I have been studying martial arts for the best part of twelve years and for the last several years have felt something was lacking in my training. Since joining Koryu I have rediscovered my passion for karate. Classes are structured without becoming stale or boring and everything taught not only has a purpose but is explained and applied, an important distinction often missing in other clubs. Even as a black belt I have already seen improvements in all aspects of my training which I was not expecting after so short a time. The syllabus is laid out in a straight forward and logical progression which is easy to learn whether you come from a martial arts background or you've never thrown a punch in your life. Regardless of age or experience Koryu Uchinadi offers realistic and rewarding karate for everyone.

AARON
School Teacher - 1st Dan Go Kan Ryu Karate

Being a black belt before discovering Koryu Uchinadi, and training with several other systems, I can honestly say that KU it is the most enjoyable and rounded system i have been involved with. It offers a holistic syllabus with grounded basics, while offering the essential tiered system of beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. It is a no non-sense system inclusive of the somewhat forgotten karate techniques of head butting, gouging, throws and ground fighting all of which create a diverse karate-ka ready to defend themselves. Sensei Marc is a gifted instructor who has the ability to adapt to us as students individually and scaffold us all to the next skill level regardless of size, knowledge or current level. Another positive is the use of set patterns for all our striking, blocking, kicking, self defence, tegumi, ect, as this hones our muscle memory from class #1. All in all, this is a style one could practice for a very long time. I definitely recommend it!

Sensei Marc Mathews has been my Sensei since 1990. As a current serving police officer I have had many opportunities to put Sensei Marcs practical self-defense techniques into real life situations. Sensei Marc's techniques really work. Sensei Marc has a great passion and ability to teach martial arts to anyone and his enthusiasm and energy within a class is infectious. Sensei Marc's ability as an instructor to recognize each student’s strengths and weaknesses allows each student to reach their full potential. I have no reservations in recommending Sensei Marc from a beginner to an advanced black belt, Sensei Marc is the real deal!

I recently commenced training with sensei Marc after a long break from martial arts training. Twelve years in fact! It was very difficult to start training again. I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into the dojo with a belt that I didn’t feel like I deserved anymore. But sensei Marc was encouraging and welcoming, as were the other black belts and seniour students (most of whom shared a similar experience to mine). In no time my fitness, flexibility and conditioning returned. Most importantly, my long forgotten passion for training and my "spirit", were re-ignited. KU offers a usable form of self defence, whilst maintain the traditional goals of self-discipline, fortitude of character and respect for self and others. If your thinking of coming back to martial arts training or stating for the first time, give it a go!

After studying Shotokan Karate in the UK and training with a number of karate realists, I wanted to find a holistic and pragmatic system to train in after emigrating to Australia...I found that system with Koryu Uchinadi at Newcastle Karate, training under Sensei Marc Mathews. Kicking, striking, grappling and ground fighting are all part of Koryu's syllabus, making it just what I was looking for!

I hadn't been exercising for a number of years since starting a family so was obviously unfit. My kids started training so I attended the kids class to "join in". It didn't take me long before I wanted to attend the adults class as everyone is very welcoming. I have been able to laterally apply the discipline and fitness I now have to the rest of my life. Kayaking, swimming, coaching soccer, everything I wanted to do with my kids is now all a breeze.

Our boys are learning a variety of skills in a disciplined and encouraging environment at Newcastle Karate. There is always a great Sensei to student ratio which provides a greater level of personal instruction. The classes are fun with the boys eager to attend the next session and the online information helps reinforce the techniques when practising at home. We feel our boys are benefiting greatly from their time at Newcastle Karate and with some hard work, there may be future black belts in our household!

Taekwondo 1st Dan Black Belt

During my training journey in Taekwondo to 1st Dan Black Belt, I learnt patterns (set sequences of moves), perfected punches, kicks, blocks & participated non-contact sparring, however I felt something in my training was missing. I visited Newcastle Karate & was invited by Sensei Marc Mathews to join a class, by the end of that first night I found what I was looking for, a great flexible martial arts programme along with padwork combinations & supervised, respectful & disciplined contact sparring. So whether you’re a novice or have a boxing or a martial arts background please come down & join in a training session, Newcastle Karate will open a whole new way of martial arts training & fitness.

1st Dan Koryu Uchinadi

I first started training with Sensei Marc Mathews in 1994 in Shorinjiryu Karate. It was during my first year of training that Sensei started training under Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. As a student I did not realize how incredible lucky I was to be introduced to the martial arts style that is Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu. In the martial arts world of competitive sports related styles we were lucky to have found a style that was effective against habitual acts of violence, studied the anatomic human movement and the associated reaction to manipulation of vital points and nerve endings. If you are thinking of starting a martial art than you will be extremely lucky to have an exceptional teacher like Sensei Marc. If you already have been training in a sports orientated Martial Art, then you might enjoy the journey of discovery that Koryu Uchinadi will take you on.

Marc Mathews, Karate school is a great way to get some fitness done with the benefit of training with your Children, I have my daughters in Marcs Karate school and have found their confidence and fitness has improved a lot. Karate is more than just a martial art it teaches Discipline and respect for others which is a great thing for children to know. Marcs classes are taught in a relaxed easy to understand style. which comes from Marcs easy going nature, I personally have had knee and back problems from being a fire fighter and found the training has helped with my flexibility a lot and has meant my posture has improved. So for a fun way to get some fitness done with your Children give Marc a ring.

Newcastle Karate has been an excellent club that has benefited my son who is 6 and myself aged 42. I injured my leg many years ago and the stretching and training has improved my leg and overall body condition really well. Sensei Marc is a really good teacher and the style really suits both self defence and physical endurance / fitness. My son has benefited from the classes. It is the first time ever that he has focused on a single task for a full lesson ... unbelievable for a 6-year-old. He is much more confident and not afraid of bullying at his school now. I hope he goes all the way to a black belt.

Since my daughter started at Newcastle Karate three years ago she has developed not only new skills but a sense of passion to all, she puts her mind to. She has made several new friends and is always very eager to attend.

My son started with Marc at Newcastle Karate during his first year at school, and in the years since then has made steady progress towards his goal of achieving a black belt. Marc and the other Sensei's have been very accommodating of his physical limitations, and have helped us to develop a stronger, more disciplined and confident child. We have seen the benefits of his training and persistence with learning have a positive impact on his school work as well. All of the kids at the dojo seem to have the right spirit, and the focus is definitely on developing the ability to defend yourself, and I believe the skills he is learning will help him overcome any obstacles he may face in future. I've also enjoyed picking up a few tips and moves when practising with him at home! I'm so proud of his achievements to date and can't wait to have a black belt in the family!

Having trained in another style for the last 7 years with my son and daughter we lost some focus due to the fact we were spending too much time on Kata and point style sparring. Since joining Newcastle karate I have found the style to be a well-rounded system from standup to throws and ground control. As much as I myself enjoy the Newcastle karate syllabus I feel better knowing my children are doing a style that will give them the right skills to defend themselves if the need requires. Sensei Marc is a great instructor and with his team make classes functional and fun regaining my passion for karate. If you are thinking of trying something new or you are a first time student of any age, I have no reservations in recommending Newcastle karate as the style for you to try. Very happy dad

Jack my son had just finished training when he said thanks dad for always taking him. I said that’s ok mate you must really want to be a black belt if you train four times a week and he replied to me no dad i want to be a sensei so i to can help train other kids like me. It was this moment I had relised my son had become part of the Newcastle Karate family. I would like to thank sensei Mark and his team for not only being great instructors but also for being the greatest role models in the community. What you guys do for these kids is awesome you teach them self-confidence, belief and respect for themselves and others and that hard work and commitment will bring rewards. I love watching my son grow with the belief and self-discipline you have instilled in him. The day Jack receives his black belt will no doubt bring a tear to my eye but I will know the day he put on a white belt and went to Newcastle Karate to train was his greatest achievement.

I have been under a deep positive impression since I first entered the club's dojo in March. Everything has a touch of taste, care and love. The training area, toilets, changing places are clean, everything is very well arranged, there is so much space and "clear air", I breathe so well here, it's really pleasant to train. Sensei Marc is a real magnet to attract people to his school, a man with a heart of gold. I train with the BJJ group under a great coach Fabricio Pereira and I am in the middle of my best martial arts journey here. I just don't have enough words to express my gratitude.

Tried my first MMA class with Fabricio Pereira today, can't speak highly enough of him as a coach. Will be back for his specialty - the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class! After seeing the karate instructors and little ones in action today, I will also be enrolling my daughter in the karate classes.

Plus having fun... I'm not a gym junkie but like 2 keep active but could never find the time... it's an hour a week 4 me only... Find the time... Give it a go! I couldn’t give a bigger wrap to this well run martial arts facility. I have two young boys who train once a week, the growth and skills they have learned in a year has made me one proud dad. Excellent skilled trainers to student ratio. I have been a student in the adults karate class with only due to work commitments i have regrettably had to put a hold on my classes which was not an issue. This form of karate was more practical than i imagined, techniques and training which relate to the real world in my opinion. Physically challenging, yes, confidence building, yes. As a current serving police officer i certainly found this form of martial arts to be superior to any physical training i have received in the force. Can only say get the family or yourselves down for a go you will not regret it.

Happy dad and son!

I just wanted to take a moment to say how much my son, Thomas, and I are enjoying training at Newcastle Karate! The instructors are first class folks. Thomas has gained a lot of self-confidence from training, and he's learning more self-control as a direct result of the discipline it takes to practice martial arts. I've long suffered with lower back pain and the training has helped relieve much of it. I've also dropped 15 kilograms and 2 pant sizes since starting training 9 months ago!! I'm feeling and looking better!

Newcastle Karate is an all-round excellent mixed martial arts club. I had been training for 4 years in 2 other clubs and felt disconnected. Sensei Marc trains with all of his students which shows his dedication to the club. Newcastle Karate combines other mixed martial art skills which I love and have finally found what I’m looking for.! The other guys and girls are awesome to train with and there is a real genuine feel that you belong to the club. Apart from a dynamic mixed martial arts style it’s a massive workout that caters to all levels. Love it..... Sign me up for lifetime membership!!

My son has ADHD and Oppositional defiance disorder, he started at Newcastle Karate at the beginning of this year and his behaviour and focus has improved dramatically. He listens, learns and shows respect. I have a different child when he attends karate. There is no defiance, no behavioural problems, he excels and you wouldn't know he has any of these issues. He plays other sports with no interest and is easily distracted or doesn't want to go or participate. I highly recommend Newcastle Karate.

Just wanted to acknowledge and say a big thank you to sensei Marc and his staff for running such an organised and professional karate class. Our son Byron joined Newcastle Karate some months ago and trains twice a week. Not only are we seeing a change in his self confidence but also his teachers have noticed a significant growth in this area. When making choices about the type of activity you want your child to participate in away from school you want somewhere that will engage them so they enjoy the experience and want to return, encourage them to respect not only themselves but others and empower them with skills that enhance their self-confidence. As their logo states Newcastle Karate encapsulate these elements perfectly and I encourage all parents to make the time and book your child into a class.

Students at St Paul's Booragul have had karate as an option for Friday afternoon Sport. Besides the obvious benefit of Improving the ability to defend yourself other benefits of studying Martial arts include: Fitness, Reduced risk of Injury, Self-discipline, focus and concentration, Respect for yourself and each other, Self-confidence These benefits go beyond doing well in martial arts. For students these benefits translate directly into ability to focus and perform better at schoolwork. Sensei Marc Mathews, assisted by Sensei Laurie, of Newcastle Karate has been instructing classes of about 20 students on Friday afternoons. A typical class includes warm up exercises to improve strength and flexibility, basic punching, blocking and kicking techniques and self-defence techniques against pushes and grabs. The students have enjoyed participating and their improvement has been quite noticeable.

I chose Newcastle Karate because it was a lot of fun from the very first class. I feel comfortable, accepted and respected, it makes me feel confident and calm. I like that there are a lot of Sensei's to help you, so you don’t have to wait for one instructor to come around and help you, there is always someone to help you and show you the correct moves. Before being introduced to Karate I had low self-esteem, But Karate has taught me to be confident from how I walk to how I talk. I have gained so much self-discipline through learning self-defense that it has made me more aware of my surroundings and respectful of all people. I feel my life is more structured and I have goals - one is to earn my black belt. At Newcastle Karate they make you feel like a winner, I felt that I always failed at my previous sports but with Newcastle Karate you are highly respected. I have seen other Karate schools and tried them but Newcastle Karate is by far the best, the other schools have one or two instructors for a class of 30 or more but at Newcastle Karate there are Four or more instructors (sensei's) to teach, guide and support on a more personal level. Besides the opportunity to meet great people and earn self-defense, you will have a lot of fun!

Before we joined Newcastle Karate we looked around at the other Karate schools and our girls chose Newcastle Karate as their favourite straight away. Furthermore, it was the best value for money compared to the other karate schools. The experience and professionalism is of a very high standard without the high price tag. Everyone is friendly, welcoming and more than happy to help and support you. The fact that there are a lot more instructors per student is an advantage. Within a few weeks we noticed our girls’ concentration, focus and discipline increase and an overall positive attitude. We recommend Newcastle Karate to anyone who is looking for a professional and friendly karate school.

Tae Kwon Do black belt

After training in Tae Kwon Do and receiving my 1st Dan Black Belt I found sadly I had lost my passion for martial arts with its point scoring style of sparring. At first I was apprehensive to begin a new style of martial arts believing I would be sent all the way back to square one with my training and I would find some adversity towards being a black belt from a different style. However, these doubts were immediately dispelled within ten minutes of my first lesson. Newcastle Karate has a great team of friendly instructors and a community of students that provides support and encouragement to all who pass through its doors. Incorporating elements not just from Karate but other martial arts, students are provided with a diverse understanding of self defence, contact sparring and fundamental techniques with a noticeable improvement in fitness and flexibility. I also have joined their Ladies Only Kickboxing classes and have to say I've never had more fun in a sport before.

I have never been in a dojo where it's like a little family, everyone just gets along so well and helps each other out. There are an amazing range of black belts in the class, were in most styles you only get one per class! Sensei Marc is definitely a great teacher and helps push everyone where it's needed, and gain great self-defence and fighting spirt. Definitely recommend this places for children and adults.
